There is a tool with the kernel distribution which lets you do that and 
still include device nodes in the cpio archive... and your run_init.c 
currently doesn't.

I'm commenting only because of the claim my code was "messy", whereas it 
pretty much does the same thing, and arguably in a cleaner fashion (no 
3-stage delete split between shell script and C and requiring /bin/rm.)
